Course News The School of Business – Camden will be offering: Entrepreneurship: New Venture Creation (53:620:517) Taught by Professor Briance Mascarenhas with a new microfinance project. Microfinance was pioneered by Dr. M. Yunus, who received the Nobel Peace Prize and the President’s Medal of Freedom because of its major impact on alleviating poverty. Small loans given to informal groups empower them and improve their incomes, education, and health. These unsecured loans also have high repayment rates. In the course, student teams will identify a community need and be given seed funding to address it. These microfinance projects will help students develop their entrepreneurial and teambuilding skills while providing a community service. The microfinance program will be developed in the Fall 2009 class at Rutgers, and extended to K-12 students next year in order to foster entrepreneurship in the broader community.
