BUSINESS LEADER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (BLDP) - New Spring Seminar!

"Business and Spirituality" Spring 2008 Business Leader Development Program (BLDP) seminar

Applications are now being accepted for the Spring 2008 Business Leader Development Program (BLDP) seminar. The topic of this next semester's seminar will be "Business and Spirituality" and will be taught by Dr. Robert Schindler. The seminar will be meet Fridays 9 - 11:40 a.m. and will feature many community speakers.

Spirituality involves attention to the life of the mind, as opposed to a focus on only things that are concrete and material.  The everyday world of business is known for emphasizing the concrete and material, with its concentration on cutting costs, making sales quotas, and maximizing return on investment.  However, at every turn, there is an important role for spirituality in business.  Spirituality leads a manager toward respect, caring, and humility – attitudes that facilitate business success – and encourages attention to the whisperings of conscience.  In this seminar, we will explore the role of spirituality in conceiving of the business enterprise, in dealing with customers and colleagues, and in your own career decision-making.

Enrollment in the seminar is by application only, and the deadline for applying is October 31, 2008, at 5 p.m. Admitted students will earn three credits for a general business elective. The application is available online at http://camden-sbc.rutgers.edu/BLDP/. General information about the program is also available at that website. Contact Dr. Schindler (rschindl@camden.rutgers.edu) with questions pertaining to next semester's seminar. Questions about the BLDP can be directed to Allie Miller, its director, at ldrship@camden.rutgers.edu.

INTERNSHIPS

At Rutgers, we take your career preparation seriously.  The Internship Program at the School of Business works carefully with each employer and each student to create an internship that really supports the career goals of the students and the organizational goals of the host organizations.  A lot of schools offer internships that fail to actually help to advance your career prospects.  At the SBC, we prepare you for your internships; as a result, your learning experiences are extraordinarily meaningful.  You have an opportunity to network, learn workplace skills, and build a strong resume.  For more information, visit http://camden-sbc.rutgers.edu/CurrentStudents/internship.htm.

For information, contact Professor Joe Haro at jharo@camden.rutgers.edu

LIBRARY -

Now that you have your assignments for your business classes for this semester, you will need to make sure you are using the best possible information resources available to you.  Your tuition dollars pay for several dozen databases and indexes to journal articles which you can access through the Robeson Library homepage.

Go to library.camden.rutgers.edu, select Articles & Databases, then the Complete A-Z listing, then under Subject choose Business, or just go to http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/rul/indexes/biz/biz.shtml  This will get you to finding tools for business that the Rutgers subscribe to including: Business Source Premier and Factiva, for locating articles on any topic; company or industry, Accounting Research Manager, for the publications from all the major accounting bodies; Mintel for consumer demographics and lifestyle data and description.

You can access all these resources from off-campus by just putting in your NetID and password when so prompted, or by clicking on the bright yellow Not Logged In button at the top left of the library homepage, before you begin your research.

The Rutgers Libraries also provide Research Guides to get you to the best information sources in print and on the web.  Again there are several dozen: on Companies, Industries, Marketing, Small Business, and many more.  You can find these at http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/rul/rr_gateway/research_guides/busi/business.shtml

If you need help using any of the library resources, or finding information, contact your Business Librarian at the Paul Robeson Library:  Theo Haynes, haynes@camden.rutgers.edu or (856) 225-2838.

SOCIAL NETWORKING

Do you use social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook? Twitter or others?

·         Check your privacy settings carefully – do you really want your prospective employers to have access to all your information?

·         Do not include information that is security information for another account, such as home town, birthdate, etc.

·         Post photos judiciously

·         Do periodic searches to see what is actually public information about you

·         Are there any photos posted of you by friends? Are they what you want a recruiter to see?

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS – WELCOMING THE HUMAN RESOURCE STUDENT ORGANIZATION
