THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS - CHANGES IN LEADERSHIP

Effective Jan. 1, the Rutgers School of Business—Camden has a new leadership structure that will continue to advance the undergraduate program.

Dr. Rayman Solomon now serves as acting executive dean for the professional schools at Rutgers-Camden. In this capacity, he will have general oversight of the School of Business while continuing to serve as dean of the School of Law, a position that he has held since 1998. Dean Solomon, who earned both a Ph.D. and JD at the University of Chicago, is known across the university for his insight, creative thinking, and commitment to effective collaboration. He will work closely with the School of Business faculty, staff, students, and graduates to advance our business school.

In the fall, we will launch a national search for a permanent business dean to replace Dr. Mitchell Koza, who has elected to return to the faculty.

Dean Solomon has a national reputation for his commitment to developing innovative approaches to effective legal education, including a highly respected portfolio of clinical programs that provide students with real-world experience.  Under his guidance, the Rutgers School of Law steadily rises as a choice destination for top students seeking a world-class education from a premier public law school.

He seeks to apply the same vision and enthusiasm to the School of Business.  “In this competitive environment, a Rutgers degree from a professional school must signify that the student is well prepared both in theory and practice, and can make a real contribution to an employer,” says Dean Solomon.  “This holds true for undergraduates even as it applies to graduate-level programs.  I am absolutely committed to working with the students, faculty, staff, and graduates of the business school, as well as with the regional business community, to help grow opportunities for the Rutgers School of Business.”

Additionally, Dr. Eugene Pilotte has agreed to serve as vice dean of the School of Business. He most recently served as senior associate dean. In this new position, he will be responsible for academic and curricular matters in the business school, and will work collaboratively with the faculty and Dean Solomon. Dr. Pilotte is a professor of finance on the School of Business faculty.

Finally, Dr. Carol Kaufman-Scarborough and Dr. Rakesh Sambharya have agreed to serve as associate deans of undergraduate and graduate studies, respectively. Both of these are newly-created associate deanships. Dr. Kaufman-Scarborough is a professor of marketing, Dr. Sambharya a professor of management.

They join Dr. Sam Rabinowitz, who continues to serve as associate dean for special projects, and Nathan Levinson, who remains associate dean for finance and administration.

BUSINESS POLICY COURSE TIP

It has been brought to my attention that many students were unaware of what our capstone course Business Policy entails.  This course builds on your prior courses that are business fundamentals:  Management Accounting, Introduction to Financial Accounting, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Finance, MIS, Management Science, Operations Management, and Organizational Behavior. This semester we are piloting a review site on sakai for students who will be taking the course this Spring. Once it is thoroughly tested, we will make it available for all our students. BILLS, BILLS, BILLS -

Every semester the School of Business has to call and email students whose names we receive from the Registrar due to non-payment of their term bills. Students who do not confirm their registration (even with a zero balance), do not make payments, or make payment arrangements will be disenrolled from classes. Be sure that you are not one of those students by planning ahead!!

In order to conserve natural resources, the University will no longer mail paper term bills to your home address for Rutgers Tuition and Fee charges. You will be notified by email when your term bill is available on line. Visit our web site at www.studentabc.rutgers.edu  for further information.  Term bills are due on January 5, 2009.

WARNING NOTICES – WHY DO WE SEND THEM AND WHAT TO DO NEXT

Your professor may send you a warning notice if he or she is concerned about your academic performance and/or your attendance. If you receive a warning, go talk to you professor to see what you need to do in order to improve your success in the class. Many professors assign points for class participation, and frequent absences can significantly affect your grade.

Students should also use the warning notices to evaluate whether they should drop a class. The drop date provides you with time so that professors can give students graded feedback.

Per the most recent academic calendar for Spring the last day to drop a course is April 6th.  Note that the calendar at http://registrar.rutgers.edu/CM/Spring09_calendar.htm provides specific information.

Have a great semester!  Please email your questions and suggestions!
